How to Change a WhatsApp Group Photo

Steps to change WhatsApp group and channel cover photos, best size and format, and who can change the photo.

How to Change a WhatsApp Group Photo

A WhatsApp group or channel photo is the visual identity members see in their chat lists. The right image improves recognition, taps, and join rates. This guide covers changing group and channel photos on Android and iPhone, recommended size and format, and permission settings.

Changing a group photo on Android

Open WhatsApp and the group you want to update. Tap the group name at the top. On Group info, tap the small pencil icon on the current photo.

You'll see three options: Take photo, Gallery, or Remove photo. Gallery is most common. After selecting, WhatsApp shows a square crop screen; adjust framing and tap the checkmark.

The new photo updates immediately in all members' chat lists. The change appears in the group as "This user changed the group photo."

Changing a group photo on iPhone

Open the group in WhatsApp and tap the group name. On Group Info, tap Edit Photo or Change under the current image.

On iPhone you'll see Take Photo or Video, Choose Photo or Video, or Remove Photo. When picking from gallery, WhatsApp offers square crop; high-resolution uploads usually stay sharp.

After upload, a small in-group notification appears. Group photos are included in iCloud backup; reinstalling WhatsApp with the same Apple ID restores them on a new phone.

Best photo size and format

WhatsApp crops group photos to 640×640 px and displays them as 192×192 avatars. Upload at least 640×640 (e.g., 1024×1024) to avoid quality loss.

JPEG and PNG are supported. PNG keeps transparency but larger file size—good for logos. JPEG is smaller with possible color loss—fine for photos. WebP works but is less common.

Use a plain or minimal background. Busy images become unreadable at 192×192. For logos, leave about 10% safe margin at the edges because crop varies slightly by device.

Who can change the group photo

By default, all members can edit group name, description, and photo. In large groups that can cause chaos if someone keeps changing the image.

To restrict this: Group settings > Edit group info > Admins only. Then only admins can change name, description, and photo.

Channels are different: only channel admins (owner and appointed admins) can change the channel photo; followers cannot. That one-way design is the default.

Tips for a professional look

Brand consistency: match avatars across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter—same palette, font, and icon. Create a 1024×1024 master in Canva or Figma and export sizes per platform.

Dark avatar trap: WhatsApp dark mode backgrounds are near dark gray; pure black or very dark gray avatars can disappear. A one-pixel contrasting edge improves visibility.

Seasonal updates: some communities (e.g., sports fan groups) change avatars for season start, derby week, etc. Small updates every 4–6 months (year on logo, season icon) add freshness without chaos.

FAQ

Are all members notified when I change the group photo?

Yes. WhatsApp posts "X changed the group photo" in the group. Everyone sees it; there is no silent change option.

Can I view old group photos?

No. WhatsApp does not archive previous group photos—you only see the current one. Save old images to your gallery before replacing them if you want to keep them.

Why do I get an error when uploading a group photo?

Common causes: file over ~8 MB, unsupported format (BMP, TIFF), weak connection, or outdated WhatsApp. Fix: compress under 8 MB, convert to JPEG/PNG, and update the app.

Can I use an animated GIF as a group photo?

No. Group and channel photos must be static. If you upload a GIF, WhatsApp saves only the first frame as a still image.

Can I change the photo if I'm not an admin?

If Edit group info is set to All participants, yes. If it is Admins only, you need an admin to change it or to promote you.
