WhatsApp Channels launched globally in late 2023 and became widely used in Turkey in 2024. Only the channel owner (admin) can post; followers can react and answer short polls. For news, crypto, education, personal brands, and company updates, channels are often more practical than groups. This guide covers creating a channel on Android and iPhone, growing followers, and the verification (blue check) process.
Channel or group—which is right for you?
WhatsApp channels and groups serve different purposes, not interchangeable ones. Channel: one-way posts from admins; followers can react. Group: everyone can chat. Choose a channel for announcements only; choose a group for conversation.
Three big channel advantages over groups: (1) unlimited followers (groups cap at 1,024), (2) follower phone numbers stay private, (3) almost no spam or troll risk because followers cannot write. That is why channels grew quickly in media, personal brands, e-commerce updates, and crypto signals.
The main downside: channel followers cannot DM you—they can only react (heart, thumbs up, etc.) or vote in polls you create. For Q&A, many admins run a separate group and link to it from channel posts.
How to create a WhatsApp channel on Android
Open WhatsApp and go to the Updates tab. You'll see Channels at the top with a + icon on the right. Tap it and choose Create channel.
If this is your first channel, WhatsApp shows an intro screen. Tap Continue, then enter channel name and description. Names are limited to 25 characters; descriptions to 500. You can change the name later, but frequent changes confuse followers.
Upload a channel photo (1024×1024 px square is recommended). It appears as a small round avatar in followers' chat lists. Prefer a clean logo or icon that represents your brand. Tap Create channel to finish.
How to create a WhatsApp channel on iPhone
In WhatsApp, open the Updates tab. Tap + at the top right and choose New Channel. Pass the intro screen and tap Continue.
On iPhone you'll see fields for name, description, and icon. Pick from gallery or camera; iPhone's square crop can trim to 1024×1024. Tap Create channel to finish.
After creation, your channel is included in iCloud backup. When you change phones and reinstall WhatsApp with the same Apple ID, channel admin rights transfer automatically.
Channel invite link and growing followers
After creating the channel, open the three-dot menu above the channel name and choose Invite link or Share link. The system creates a unique whatsapp.com/channel/... URL. Unless you reset it, this link is permanent.
Share the link in social bios, on your website, in email signatures, and on other messaging apps to grow followers. For a branded product, putting it in Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok bios is critical. You can also turn the link into a QR code for print.
In Turkey, channel directories can bring extra organic followers. For directory listing, include one or two sentences in the description that clearly state the topic—helpful for Google and directory SEO.
How to get a blue check (official verification)
WhatsApp channel blue checks (verified channel, not the same as a green check for the owner) are granted by Meta to a limited number of accounts. As of 2026 there is no open application process; Meta is selective.
To improve your chances: (1) promote the channel link on your brand's official website, (2) keep the channel active with quality content, (3) open a Meta Business Suite account and try to list the WhatsApp channel there. Verification is not automatic; Meta may invite you at some point.
Verified channels can surface more prominently in suggested channels as follower count grows, which sometimes triggers a growth spike. Verification can be revoked if spam or misleading content is detected.
Channel management and content strategy
To stay active, aim for at least one post per day or five per week. WhatsApp's algorithm tends to drop channels with no posts in the last 30 days from suggested lists. A regular calendar matters for growth.
Message formats: text (1,024 characters), photo (16 MB), video (16 MB / ~90 seconds recommended), document (100 MB), poll (12 options). Divide reaction counts by follower count; a 3–5% reaction rate is generally healthy.
You can add co-admins (up to 16). Go to Channel info > Admins. Co-admins have broad powers on the channel—choose carefully.
FAQ
Does it cost money to open a WhatsApp channel?
No. Creating a channel and gaining unlimited followers is free. Meta may charge for premium features (analytics, custom reactions) in the future, but core channel use is expected to stay free.
Can I see my channel followers' phone numbers?
No. Channel architecture is designed to protect follower privacy. You see total follower count and reaction counts on messages—not individual follower identities.
How many channels can I create on one phone?
WhatsApp allows up to 16 channels under one account. Each has its own admin interface. Starting with 3–5 active channels is more effective than opening 16 and leaving them idle.
If I delete a channel, do followers know?
When a channel is deleted, it is removed from followers' chat lists. They typically see a notice that the channel no longer exists. Deletion cannot be undone; reopening does not bring old followers back automatically.
How does channel discovery work in Turkey?
WhatsApp's Find Channels section lists popular channels in Turkey by category. In 2024, news, crypto, education, and entertainment stood out. New channels that grow organically in the first 30 days may enter those lists.
